Spansion® EcoRAM™ Memory Helps Solve Data Center Energy Crisis

According to recent reports from Dr. Jonathan Koomey, an expert in energy efficiency and a Consulting Professor at Stanford University, data centers are a growing consumer of electricity. Between 2000 and 2005, data center energy consumption doubled, from a total of 71 billion kilowatt hours per year (kWh/yr) to over 150 billion kWh/yr. If current trends persist, data center electricity use will continue to grow at a rapid pace.

One of the key contributors to data center growth is the explosion of data. Across industries, the need to store and process large data sets is on the rise. From index files of search engines to databases of popular social networking sites and seismic data for visualization and modeling in oil and gas, they all have a common need to store large amounts of data within quick reach of the CPU.

Data center managers in industries including Internet, Analytics, Oil and Gas, Government, Bioinformatics and Business Intelligence now have a new memory solution to help fight growing energy demands and the need for quick access to large data sets, the Spansion® EcoRAM™ solution. By expanding main memory of standard x86 servers with Spansion EcoRAM memory, managers can increase in-memory storage up to 512GB in a single server, while cutting energy consumption by up to 75% and reducing total cost of ownership. All while increasing performance up to 60x in certain read-intensive applications.

"The Spansion EcoRAM solution is a breakthrough memory architecture for our read-intensive applications like visualization and data transpose," said Robert Clapp, senior research engineer of Geophysics, Stanford Exploration Project, Stanford University. "A step in the processing flow that would normally take 22 hours to complete using the standard disk to DRAM architecture can now be performed in 22 minutes using the Spansion EcoRAM solution. We're seeing performance improvements approaching two orders of magnitude better than our existing system. It's quite impressive."

Benefits of the Spansion EcoRAM Solution

  • Expands main memory capacity to 512GB for standard x86 servers
  • Increases performance of read-intensive applications up to 50X
  • Enables 4X server consolidation
  • 60% lower TCO for the data center possible through reductions in footprint costs, capital expense and energy costs.
